Fyfe hat-trick ends Rebel-lion

A Gary Fyfe hat-trick in the final 12 minutes of play handed Upstarts an improbable win against an otherwise impressive Rebels side on Sunday.

The first half of this match was a well contested battle with both sides pushing for the opener. A number of short corners were wasted by the Upstarts and it was only a matter of time before the Rebels pressure resulted in a deserved goal from John Richmond.

Rebels came back in the second half looking even more hungry and increased their lead to two with an excellent finish from Dave Gutteridge.

Rebels continued to control the match and seemed destined to obtain their first league win of the season.

But Fyfe, pictured, single-handedly pulled the Upstarts from an abysmal finish with a 12-minute display of class. His first goal came after a well-worked move down the left from Harsha Dias and Eoghan O?Dwyer found him unmarked in the circle. With an assured first touch, Fyfe composed himself and flicked high into the roof of the net from 12 yards out.

Upstarts, sensing that there was time to get the equaliser, pressed on and were awarded a short corner two minutes later. With Rebels expecting a Neil Carroll strike from the top of the circle, the ball was instead pushed back toward Fyfe who rounded a defender before again finding the roof of the net with a flick.

The shocked Rebels side were now focussed on seeing out the final ten minutes, however, a late short corner completed the incredible comeback when Fyfe somehow tipped a Carroll pass in off the right-hand post.

In other men?s play, Panthers earned a 3-2 victory over Police Polecats.

Heading in to the final weekend of regular play, there is still an open battle for the men?s title between Panthers and Chameleons.

Meanwhile in the Ladies A league, Swallows battled to an exciting 3-3 draw with nearest-rivals Ravens on the weekend.

Swallows already held a commanding lead at the top of the table and could only be stopped if Ravens pulled out a win.

Swallows took the lead early in the game after a target-hitting shot from Jenny Burrell. Ravens? Caroline Black stepped up to even the score after converting off a short corner.

The game looked set to go into the second half at 1-1 but Emily Black pulled out a second Ravens goal after a scramble in the circle.

Ravens came out fighting hard in the second half and soon earned their third goal, nicely put in by Megan Spurling.

If Ravens had held, Swallows undefeated season would have been history but it was not to be. Swallows never looked like they were about to give up.

An aerial goal from Kirstie Kelly soon put the pressure back on the Ravens and with ten minutes left, Yvonne Slattery completed the comeback with a short corner goal to make it 3-3.

The draw confirms Swallows as the A League champs and they will now be looking to double up their title during the Knock-Out Cup.

In other A play, Swifts defeated Cardinals 2-1 while Canaries took down Bluebirds 1-0.

The B league title remains an open question, however. Cardinals earned a little breathing room at the top with a 5-0 defeat of Swifts on the weekend.

Meanwhile, Swallows stalled in a scoreless draw with Ravens and Canaries and Bluebirds drew 1-1.
