Young Bermudians keen to work in the island’s growing tech sector have a wide range of opportunities, panellists at the Bermuda Virtual Tech Summit said today.

Jeff Baron is the chief compliance officer at Bittrex Global Bermuda, which is licensed by the Bermuda Monetary Authority to operate a cryptocurrency exchange.

Speaking about employment opportunities in the sector, he said: “There is this misunderstanding that fintech, or particularly digital assets, is open for business only to those who are Bitcoin enthusiasts.

“The ecosystem really does touch on every sector, whether you’re a lawyer, whether you’re in operations management, human resources, compliance, risk functions — the ecosystem within fintech, within the digital asset space in Bermuda, touches almost every sector.”

Mr Baron added: “That is exciting. Operations management, office management, executive assistants — they are all part of our ecosystem now, and that’s only going to grow.

“So, if you are someone who is looking to come back to Bermuda — you’re Bermudian — or if you are someone who is looking to migrate their business over to Bermuda, just know that the ecosystem includes almost every sector within itself.

“It’s not just for enthusiasts who are trading Bitcoins.”

Mr Baron appeared on the panel “Living, Employed and Deployed in Tech Central” at the summit presented by the Bermuda Business Development Agency.

He was joined by panellists Tasha Jones, counterparty manager at StableHouse, which is to launch a digital asset platform, as well as Stephanie Shih, general counsel at StableHouse’s parent company, XBTO Offshore Group, and moderator Steven Rees Davies, a partner at the law firm Carey Olsen.

As more exchanges come online, and more fintech companies enter the market on-island, Ms Jones said, there will also be more employment opportunities for accountants as well as for software engineers and developers.

Ms Shih said: “At StableHouse it started two years ago with maybe three employees, and now we are hiring chief compliance officers, we are hiring office managers locally. We always need engineers, even someone who is good at social media.

“Customer support is something that has recently been high up on our list of what we need to employ.

“There are definitely a lot of opportunities in Bermuda, and even outside Bermuda, to support the companies.”
