Disused buildings attract interest from developers
A variety of proposals to renovate two Government buildings have been submitted, the Ministry of Public Works said earlier this week.
A ministry spokesman said three groups had drawn up plans to renovate the old prison service headquarters on Happy Valley Road in Pembroke.
He added that four proposals had been made to rescue the disused and crumbling Doubloon Cottage in Sandys.
The spokesman said: “The objective behind the request for proposals for each site was to find a tenant who is willing to refurbish at their own cost in return for a rent-free payback period.
“Presently, the ministry is working with a bidder for each site on a provisional offer to lease and rehabilitate the two buildings.”
The public works ministry asked for proposals for both sites on August 23, with a closing date of September 13.
The public works ministry said the former prison headquarters, which covers about 9,160 square feet, needed “extensive renovation works”, including the roof.
Doubloon Cottage, in Hog Bay National Park, has been empty for several years and is in poor condition.
The area also contains additional land that could be used for “suitable ancillary purposes”, although applicants were warned that any development had to be in keeping with the parkland and farmland around the site.
