The US has announced it will make limited exceptions for unvaccinated foreigners to enter the country.

Exceptions will be made for children, people who have to visit for emergency or humanitarian reasons and people who cannot have the vaccine for medical reasons.

Others who may be allowed to enter the US without vaccination include people involved in some Covid-19 vaccine clinical trials, travellers on non-tourist visas from countries with low availability of vaccine, members of the Armed Forces and their families, airline crew, sailors and diplomats.

A spokeswoman for the US Consulate in Bermuda said: "On October 25, the Biden Administration released details behind the new international air travel policy that is stringent, consistent across the globe, and guided by public health.

"Starting on November 8, foreign national air travellers to the United States will be required – with only limited exceptions – to be fully vaccinated and to provide proof of vaccination status prior to boarding an airplane to fly to the United States.

"This new global travel policy replaces the existing country-by-country restrictions, putting in place a consistent approach worldwide."

Unvaccinated travellers, including US citizens and permanent residents, will need to show proof of a negative test taken inside one day of travel to the US

The US Centres for Disease Control said that only vaccines approved by the US Food and Drug Administration or World Health Organisation emergency-use listed vaccines would be accepted for entry to the country.

Approved vaccines include Pfizer, Moderna, Johnson & Johnson and AstraZeneca.

The consulate spokeswoman said: "It is important to note that fully vaccinated air travellers will continue to be required to show documentation of a pre-departure negative viral test taken within three days of travel to the United States before boarding.

“That includes all travellers – US citizens, lawful permanent residents and foreign nationals.
