A belated push for speed cameras
Dear Sir,
Considering the tragic loss of lives on our roads, mainly from motorbike crashes, I feel compelled to write this letter.
I have a theory regarding the speeding of traffic on the island these days, and the dangerous driving particularly of motorbike riders, who take hazardous risks, weaving between cars and around blind bends, risking their lives and potentially that of others.
There was a time many years ago when the most powerful motorbikes allowed on the island were limited to 50cc. However, these days, and for a long time now, the power of motorbikes far, far exceeds this. If the bikes have the power, the riders have the ability to use this power, which is treacherous on our narrow, winding roads.
Regarding cars and speeding, until relatively recently, it was unheard of for cars to pass cars, and as with motorbike riders, it must be just for thrills, because on these roads it doesn't get them far, but endangers others in the process.
There have been initiatives to try to prevent the speeding, but it seems mostly to no avail. Rumble strips have little effect and the police can’t be everywhere!
I wonder if speed cameras could be a solution. I fear the proverbial horse may have long bolted!
