Youngsters will discuss their concerns about the future in a televised event tomorrow.

The Bermuda International Youth Summit, organised by the Hamilton Rotary Club, will allow youth groups and university students to air their views on topics such as environmental problems and employment opportunities.

Rick Richardson, the president-elect of the Hamilton Rotary Club, said that the summit would include a segment from an eight-year-old schoolgirl about the importance of bees in the environment.

He added: “I think what our audience will gather from her discussion is that we can empower our young people at a very early age.”

The summit, backed by Dennis Lister III, the Speaker of the House of Assembly, was designed to give young people a platform for their opinions and get them aired in Parliament.

The event will involve live presentations, as well as recorded video statements from students at overseas institutions.

Participants will be able to put questions to Ernest Peets, the Minister of Youth, Culture and Sport, who will also make a statement about the summit in the House.

Aaron Crichlow, a member of the youth volunteer group Bermuda is Love, will deliver a presentation on the impact of climate change and pollution and suggest ways to tackle the problem.

Sandro Fubler, a young Bermudian who operates his own physiotherapy practice, will speak about the importance of helping disenfranchised young men.

Groups including the Future Leaders of Bermuda and the Bermuda Youth Parliament will also take part.

The summit will also feature a submission by Jason Gonzalez, the assistant governor for Bermuda’s Rotary district and a United Nations representative based in Mexico.

The summit will be held on Friday at the Hamilton Princess Hotel.

The event, which starts at 8pm, will be shown live on Channel 82, the Rotary Club’s social media pages and on The Royal Gazette’s website.

The summit will also have a live audience, but scaled down to comply with health regulations.
