Madelyn Moore smashes multiple school records at swim meet
Madelyn Moore warmed up for the upcoming fifteenth Fina World Short Course Championships in the best possible way, while competing for the University of Northern Colorado at the weekend.
The senior and team captain blazed her way to four school records and as many personal best times at the Mid-Season Invitational at Dixie State University in St George, Utah.
“Overall, I am amazed honestly how the meet went,” Moore told The Royal Gazette. “I was super happy.”
Moore said she and her team-mates exceeded their expectations.
“We definitely didn’t taper for this meet so we didn’t rest as much as we usually would for a meet like this,” she added. “And especially me because I will be leaving for Worlds at the beginning of December.
“We didn’t want to come down from training too much so to see the results that we did and the personal best and school records that I got were pretty awesome.”
A personal best time in the 4x50m freestyle relay set the tone for bigger and better things to come from the talented swimmer.
“The final started with the 4x50m freestyle relay and I anchored it and went a 21.88, which is the fastest relay sprint that I’ve ever gone,” Moore said. “So I think that gave me the confidence to kind of go out and do what I did in the 50m free individual.”
The 20-year-old went on to slash three tenths of a second off her own school record on the way to winning the 50m freestyle “A” final in a new personal best time of 22.20 seconds, which also secured her an NCAA “B” cut time.
“I never really show emotion after my races, even when it’s gone low,” Moore added. “I was just so happy after I saw the 22.20.”
Moore also lowered her time and her own school record on the way to victory in the 100m freestyle in 49.17. She also established new school records and new personal best times in the 100m butterfly, 54:15 and 200m freestyle, 1:49.79 respectively.
“For these meets you can only be in seven scoring events and me and my coaches decided that, because I wanted to try and get the 200m free record, I was going to lead off in the 800m free relay because the times count,” she explained. “Basically I only did two individual and five relays which were the seven scoring. That’s why I did the 100m fly prelim swim and not the final because I would have been in too many events.
“So that’s why I aimed for the 100m fly record in the morning, which I’m thankful I got.”
The reigning Western Athletic Conference Swimmer of the Year is off to a flying start to the 2021-22 season with a string of victories already under her belt and having also twice earned conference swimmer of the week accolades.
Moore is reaping the benefits from the hard work she has put into her preparations for the World Short Course Championships to be held in Abu Dhabi from December 16 to 21.
“I’m definitely just proud with the work that I have put in,” she said. “I have been really working on fine-tuning some technical aspects of my strokes and endurance and it’s definitely starting to show,” said said.
“I’m really excited what I can do at Worlds. I’m absolutely thrilled to be representing Bermuda and I've never been so confident heading into a meet.”
Moore will be accompanied at the championships by University of Northern Colorado head coach Lisa Ebeling.
