No challengers to Swifts' supremacy
The young Swifts B team - every player is under 16 years old - is proving to be one of the most consistent sides in Bermuda hockey this season.
Securing a 2-1 win over Bluebirds on the weekend, Swifts remain undefeated and unchallenged at the top of the standings.
The Saltus girls have nine points after logging previous wins over Orioles and Ravens, putting them far ahead of nearest contenders Cardinals and Orioles, who have four points each.
Swifts have actually already faced down four opponents but a match against Swallows two weeks ago was abandoned due to a heavy downpour.
The win over Bluebirds was a welcome one as the older Swifts A side had fallen to them.
Blues, buoyed by the A win, started with confidence and scored an early goal after neat passing between Meredith Head and Denise O'Donoghue provided Suzanne Rego with a scoring opportunity.
Rego put it away but Swifts came back fast displaying character and resolve.
The schoolgirls seized momentum and were awarded a penalty flick shortly before halftime which was duly converted.
Bluebirds struggled in the second half and Swifts stepped up to take the game with a second goal.
In other B action, Cards earned a key win over the struggling Swallows to stay in contention.
The Cardinals dominated both ball possession and short corner opportunities throughout the game.
Their first goal came from a short corner as Jenny Kelly and Candy Foggo combined efforts to set up Maria Costello's for a successful shot.
Costello was back again on another penalty corner less than 15 minutes later to secure the win.
Meanwhile, Ravens and Canaries squared off to a 1-1 draw.
Jennifer Simmons secured the lone goal for Ravens while Helen Court equalised for Canaries.
Canaries are having more success with their A squad, however, largely due to the stellar efforts of centre-forward Lisa Desilva.
The team is tied with Swallows at six points apiece for A honours.
Canaries blew out a Ravens' squad missing several key players with a 5-0 result which saw Desilva grab her second season hat-trick while team-mate Emma Kelly stepped in for two more Yellow winners.
Desilva notched the first goal of the game after a well-executed short corner routine and a follow up touch from Emma Kelly took Canaries to the break with a 2-0 lead.
Roaring back into action in the second half, DeSilva took a successful strike on a penalty corner before intercepting a 16-yard hit and dribbling it to the circle where she drew the goalie off her line and tucked her third goal away.
Kelly's ability to follow up on shots and punish any loose ball in the circle provided her with her second goal of the afternoon and rounded out a resounding win for the Canaries.
In the other A league match, Bluebirds handily defeated Swifts 4-2. By half-time the Blues were up 3-0 against a Swifts' side missing several players who were off the Island on a school trip.
Swifts substitute goalie Linda Vienneau put in a valiant effort but an experienced Bluebirds forward line held on for the win.
In the men's league, only one match was played - Police Polecats holding on to their undefeated record with a 2-1 win over Upstarts.
