Leaders Hood stretched by battling Rams

North Village Rams, pointless and bottom of the Commercial League A Division, produced perhaps their best performance of the 2001-02 season, but still went away empty-handed after a 2-1 home loss to leaders Robin Hood on Saturday.

Hood led after only 10 minutes at Bernard Park through Alan Mooney then Village more than held their own for almost an hour until Paul Towlson, who knows a thing or two about causing the Village senior team headaches as a former Vasco and Hotels player, scored in the 65th minute.

Maceo Dill provided late consolation in the 88th minute for the Rams, whose Premier Division players from the not too distant past are finding the "drop" in quality to be more difficult than anticipated.

Key West Rangers, in second place, kept pace with Hood after a 3-2 victory over BAA Wanderers at St. John's Field , thanks to a late winner by Armel Thomas.

Thomas, who had put Rangers 2-1 up in the 53rd minute, netted again with five minutes remaining to seal the win. Des Minors opened the scoring for the home team before Jeff Amaral equalised on 25 minutes. Brian Crook hit BAA's second equaliser in the 62nd minute.

MR Onions took over sole possession of third place after a 2-0 win away to Vasco Mariners, Richard Helme and Gary Garnett scoring the goals.

A place further back are resurgent Lobster Pot, who recorded their third straight victory, 4-2 away to PHC Raiders. Mark McHugh gave Pot the lead in the 40th minute before a Mark Wade brace in the 56th and 60th minutes put PHC in the ascendancy.

Goals in quick succession by Tim Shave (64th) and McHugh (67th) restored the status quo and Allan Moore netted with nine minutes left to clinch it.

The result allowed Pot to leapfrog Tuff Dogs, who were being held to a 2-2 draw by Cable & Wireless. Nelson Almeida (25th) and Nathan Browne (44th) put Tuff Dogs well on their way to a third league win but the Exiles persevered and were rewarded with goals by Paul Humphreys in the 70th minute and Derek Young with five minutes to go.

St. George's All-Stars remained perfect in the B Division after a 4-1 win over Prison Officers in a top-of-the-table clash at Wellington Oval.

Joseph Foggo's 16th-minute opener looked like standing up for All-Stars until a three-goal flurry in four minutes late in the match.

Freddie Hall put All-Stars two up in the 80th minute and William Richardson scored a minute later. Denton Leader finally got the visiting team on the board in the 83rd minute but Michael Denbrook restored the east-enders' three-goal advantage almost immediately.

The significant result among the chasing pack saw Devonshire Lions get their first victory of the season, 4-2 away to Dockyard Falcons. Chris Pitcher scored twice for Lions with Anthony Amory and William Isaac hitting the other goals. Terance Corday and Steven Bremar scored for Falcons.

Troy Crockwell scored two late goals to help Bermuda Pest Control to a 2-2 draw with Valley International. Kevin Isaac put Valley ahead in the 31st minute and Earl Pringle doubled the lead five minutes into the second half. But Crockwell netted in the 70th and 87th minutes.

A similar scenario unfolded in the Wolves Pack-Devonshire Colts All-Stars fixture, with All-Stars forced surprisingly to erase a two-goal deficit. Casey Burgess put Wolves ahead in the 11th minute and Keith DeShields, who was later sent off for a second bookable offence, made it 2-0 a few minutes after. All-Stars left it late with Jimmy Tweed scoring in the 75th minute and Harrison Trott equalising in the 85th.

In the third round of the Women's Konica Cup on Sunday, PHC Zebras outscored Wolves Girls 5-4 in a thriller. Shuntae Todd led PHC with a hat-trick with Stephanie Fleming and a Georgina Hypolite own goal completing their scoring. Talitha Davis did her best to put Wolves Girls on level terms as she notched her hat-trick in the 86th minute, but it was not enough. Tiara Rogers had the other Wolves goal.

Hemisphere Royals went to the top of the table after a 4-2 defeat of Robin Hood, all their goals scored by Tanya Semos, the Bermuda international. Amy Knott and Eilean McKay-Pitcher scored for Hood.

The remaining match saw Rude Girls and Dandy Stars play to a 2-2 draw. Juanita Smith put Rude Girls ahead on the stroke of half-time but Stars responded through Stacy Smith in the 57th. Naquita Dill made it 2-1 for Rude Girls in the 64th but the lead was short-lived as Lindsay Ford equalised three minutes later.
