Berkeley double helps stretch Pot hot streak
Lobster Pot continued their fine run in the Commercial League A Division, courtesy of a 4-2 win over Cable & Wireless on Saturday at White Hill Field.
Pot, who led 2-0 at the half on goals from Troy Berkeley (10th minute) and Jermaine Binns (own goal, 23rd), did not have matters their own way as Exiles roared into action after the interval. Craig Crichlow (47th) and Mike Smith (68th) brought them level before Jim McLaren notched in the 73rd minute and Berkeley iced it with his second in the 83rd. The result kept Pot in third place behind Robin Hood and Key West Rangers but, more significantly, was their fourth win in a row after opening the league season with a pair of defeats.
Hood, the leaders, opened a six-point lead after a 3-1 win over Vasco Mariners at BAA Field. Mariners shocked their lofty guests when Michael Bean opened the scoring but Hood drew level by half-time and ended up winning in some style by the end. Mariners had Dave Barasso sent off late in the second half.
The fixture between Key West and Tuff Dogs, scheduled for St. John's Field, was postponed by the field operator because of fears that the sodden pitch would be in bad condition for the Premier Division match later that night.
MR Onions, the fourth-placed team, failed to take advantage similar to Hood and Pot, as they were held to a 2-2 draw by BAA Wanderers. Chris Fleming and Andy Robinson were on target for Onions while Martin Jones hit a brace for Wanderers.
North Village Rams belatedly achieved their first success of the season, and the club's first senior win since the debate began over their change of nickname, with a 4-0 home win over PHC Raiders. Ricky Hill, a new signing, put Village ahead in the 17th minute and Sherwin Hollis doubled it in the 33rd for a comfortable half-time cushion. Hill scored a second in the 56th minute with Paul Trott completing the scoring right at the end to help Village move out of the relegation places for the first time this season.
Charles Wade hit a hat-trick to lead St. George's All-Stars to a 5-2 win over Wolves Pack in B Division. Cal Rayner and Freddie Hall scored the other goals for All-Stars, who boast one of two perfect records in the Commercial League, while Gary Peniston and Horace Landy replied for Wolves.
Prison Officers, who are five points behind, kept pace, although they were pushed to the limit before beating Somerset Extros 4-3. Dwight Richards had two goals for the Officers and Denton Leader and Mike Lambe one apiece. Everett Wellman (2) and Donnie Simmons scored for Extros.
Bermuda Pest Control produced the sensation of the afternoon when they beat Prospect/Fire 2-0. Ernest Spence put Pest ahead in the 50th minute and David Quig scored with five minutes remaining to give the exterminators only their second win of the season.
Prospect/Fire's off-day allowed Dockyard Falcons to soar into third place, by virtue of having scored more goals, after a 3-2 win away to Devonshire Colts All-Stars. David Tear, Terence Darrell and a John Corday own goal proved the difference for the visiting team while Harrison Trott and Dwayne Cox tallied for Colts.
The remaining match saw Devonshire Lions beat Valley International 3-2. Lions roared into a three-goal lead through Andre Weeks (14th), Arthur Sinclair (53rd) and Steve Perinchief (56th) and then had to sweat it out as Valley made things interesting in the latter stages. Kevin Isaac popped up to score in the 79th minute and Jason Smith was on target five minutes later to give the visitors renewed hope.
In Women's League action, Rude Girls took their customary place at the top of the table after an 8-0 thrashing of Prospect. Chevonne Furbert bagged a hat-trick in the 24th, 30th and 49th minutes and Tamisha Darrell helped herself to two in the 13th and 48th minutes. Also in on the act were Ashley Wall (28th), Juanita Smith (6th) and Shivon Washington (80th).
Dandy Stars moved into second place by outscoring PHC 5-3 with Tina Wall hitting four goals. Lyndsay Ford had the other for Stars while Genevana Simmons and two own goals, by Shazzhina Warren and Damina Caisey, accounted for the PHC scoring.
Goalscorers for St. David's in their 5-1 win on Sunday over Southampton Rangers in a First Division clash at Lord's were incorrectly reported in Monday's paper. Otis (OJ) Minors had a hat-trick in the first half while the other two goals came from Desmond Crockwell and Kevin Lambe.
