Bermudian pair Kamau Leverock and Delray Rawlins and their Florida Scorpions team-mates will be keen to build on their solid start at the US Open Cricket T20 tournament in Fort Lauderdale, Florida today.

The Scorpions will face Titans Cricket Club in their second Group B match at the Central Broward Regional Park.

The two teams have endured fluctuating fortunes at the tournament thus far.

The Scorpions cruised to a comfortable eight wicket win over Clarion County Eagles in a match reduced to 15 overs due to rain in their tournament opener.

However, Titans Cricket Club have found the going tough, having suffered back-to-back losses against Samp Army (nine-runs) and Punjab Blues (seven wickets) in their two group matches to date.

Leverock, the Scorpions’s vice-captain, and fellow all rounder Rawlins both had a major say in their team’s convincing win over Clarion County under floodlights on Monday night.

Rawlins claimed an economical one for 14 with his left -arm spin and seamer Leverock took one for nine to help restrict Clarion County to 140 for six after they won the toss and elected to take first strike.

The Bermuda national team pair then featured in a match-winning third wicket partnership of 55 runs in four overs that powered to their team to 141 for two in reply.

Leverock anchored the run chase with a team-high 54 from 41 balls that included five fours and two sixes and reached a well-deserved half century off 37 balls with a single off West Indies off-spinner Sunil Narine.

The Bermuda captain also added 86 runs in ten overs with Calum MacLeod (30) that steadied the ship after Kyle Coetzer, the Scorpions’s captain, was dismissed for a golden duck off the first ball of the innings.

Rawlins belted a typically brisk 38 from 21 with four towering sixes and a four and also hit the winning runs that carried the Scorpions across the line with five balls to spare.

The 24-year-old Sussex all-rounder’s aggressive knock evoked memories of his boundary laden century while playing for the Paramveer Tigers against Smashers on his debut in the US Open Cricket T20 competition two years ago.

On that occasion, he thumped 101 off 35 balls, which included fourteen sixes, to guide his team to a 24-run win.

The Scorpions’s match against Titans Cricket Club today is the first of back- to- back outings as they will face Punjab Blues tomorrow before taking on Samp Army in their final Group B match on Sunday.

Group A consists of US All Stars, Cavaliers 22 Yards, NDCC Royals, Brampton Pacers and Yankee Royals.

The top two teams from each group following the initial round robin phase will progress to the semi-finals.

The winners of Group A will meet the runners-up of Group B and vice versa to determine the finalists.

A new champion will be crowned as last year’s winners Atlanta Param Veers are not involved in this year’s tournament in which the teams are all vying for $100,000 in prizes.

The tournament runs until Monday.
