Goater facing competition

Shaun Goater: Time to produce

Shaun Goater may need to produce today if he is to prevent team-mate Darren Huckerby from grabbing his Manchester City jersey.

The Bermudian striker has drawn two blanks in his last two matches - the 1-0 loss to Charlton and the 3-1 defeat at Middlesbrough - after scoring twice in the 3-1 Manchester derby triumph, that last goal his 100th for City.

Manager Kevin Keegan has entrusted Goater and Anelka with the task of steering City away from the relegation zone recently but he may decide to change things around if the Blues do not get at least a point against lowly Bolton today.

Goater is listed at odds of 5-1 to score the first goal against the Trotters at Maine Road with Anelka at 3-1.

Bolton were bottom of the table until recently, but good results against West Brom, Birmingham and Chelsea have lifted them to third from bottom.

They are 18th on 13 points while City are 16th, four points better off.

Bolton have gone 11 games since keeping a clean sheet and have not won a top flight match at Maine Road since a 3-1 success on Christmas Day 1956.

Goater, who has made eight starts and come off the bench five times so far this season, has netted four goals in the league.

Anelka, yesterday named Manchester City's Player of the Month, is the club's top scorer with eight goals from 17 appearances.

Huckerby, meanwhile, swapped places with Goater when the former fell out of favour with Keegan.

But he has impressed in the reserves, scoring five goals in the last three outings including a hat-trick against old club Leeds.

In Division Three meanwhile, Kyle Lightbourne and Macclesfield travel to Cambridge United.
