Parish Council spreads festive cheer to 100 families

More than 100 families in need will be able to enjoy a Christmas dinner after a parish council turned Santa’s little helpers.

Pembroke Parish Council teamed up at the weekend with wholesalers Butterfield & Vallis, power firm Belco and Pacheco Farms in Devonshire to ensure some festive cheer for people who were struggling.

The council at first estimated that about 40 families were eligible for the Christmas giveaway.

But after it was swamped by more than 100 applicants, the council had to step up the charity drive.

Patricka Ferguson, the chairwoman of the parish council, said: “The response was overwhelming, which just goes to show how much people are struggling right now.

“The pandemic has obviously had an effect on people financially. We’re seeing people who are out of work or are only able to do part-time work.

“People are obviously struggling. Our vision, as a council, is to help those who can’t help themselves.”

Ms Ferguson said that the 12 members of the parish council turned out to help with the giveaway, which was managed by the council’s community chairwoman, Shavondae Trott.

Ms Ferguson admitted: “It sometimes feels like a full-time job, but it’s incredibly rewarding.

“Christmas is all about giving. It’s a time of joy. But for those who don’t have anything, it can be a depressing time.

“We just want people to know that their council is there for them – to help them and support them if they are in need.“

The parish council volunteers on Saturday handed out vouchers and fresh vegetables as early Christmas presents to those in need.

The parish council office on Parsons Road was decorated by start-up companies House of Floral Balloons and Park Your Card, who also gave their services free to spread some Christmas cheer.
