Murdered footballer Osagi Bascome was remembered yesterday with a minute of silence by fans at one of his former clubs.

Darlington FC Women opened their match on Sunday with the tribute to Mr Bascome, who died after he was stabbed on Saturday.

The club said in a tweet: “Everyone from the club’s thoughts are with Osagi’s family and friends.”

Mr Bascome played football for Bermuda as well as clubs including St George’s Colts and Darlington FC in England.

Darlington FC fans said that they planned to remember Mr Bascome on Sunday with a minute of applause during the team’s Boxing Day game against Spennymoor Town, where Bermuda national team goalkeeper Dale Eve plays.

Paul Gannon, a Darlington supporter, told The Royal Gazette that the minute of applause would take place in the 23rd minute of the game because Mr Bascome was 23 years old.

He added: “He is fondly remembered by our fans who have been shocked by the tragedy.

“Everyone here has only good things to say about Osagi and the impression he made on people. He will always be remembered at Darlington Football Club.”

It is believed that Mr Bascome was stabbed several times early on Saturday morning during a disturbance outside Fun Zone in St David’s, where a party had been held.
