A barbershop with a history of honouring community heroes has this year given its accolade to a doctor.

Ricky Spence, of Rickey’s Barber Shop, presented the “Most Outstanding Member of our Bermuda Community 2021 Award” plaque to Kyjuan Brown, the founder and owner of Northshore Medical Centre.

Mr Spence, whose business in Pembroke, said he had chosen to “focus on the medical community for their outstanding work”.

He added: “I have known Dr Brown all his life, before he was a doctor and used to come to my barbershop to have me cut his hair regularly.

“He has blossomed as a young Bermudian Black man who makes a difference every day in helping others with their health.”

Mr Spence said Dr Brown’s services included hair restoration – but his community service often went unnoticed.

Dr Brown’s activities include free community health clinics and home visits for seniors.

He has also sponsored students, community sports teams, church events and his father’s community at Swan’s Running Club Turkey Trott Race.

The medical centre also donates to schools and sponsors Carol Clarke’s annual dinner for seniors.

Mr Spence added: “I observe various doctors who are agents of change and Dr Brown is one of those who deserved the recognition.”
