Hamilton set to use Triangle myth to attract more tourists
Hamilton should be at the centre of a Bermuda Triangle-based tourism boost, the city’s Mayor has said.
Charles Gosling would like to use the globally known myth to attract more visitors to the capital.
The move would be in a similar vein to the way Belfast has cashed-in on its links to the mega fantasy TV hit Game of Thrones, much of which was filmed in the Northern Irish city.
The Bermuda Triangle is said to cover a vast area of the western North Atlantic between the island, Miami and Puerto Rico where legend has it a number of ships and aircraft are said to have mysteriously disappeared.
The Mayor, who has announced he will not be seeking re-election, jokingly said he would like airline pilots to say ‘we are now entering the Bermuda Triangle’ when they fly over the area.
Mr Gosling said there would be announcement in February about how exactly Hamilton hopes to use the myth to its tourist advantage.
The Mayor told The Royal Gazette: “We are looking at doing a special outdoor – protection from the sun and the rain and all that stuff – pyramid shape, and would be at the top of the Bermuda Triangle.
“I still think that there’s an interest in the Bermuda Triangle.
“Certainly, in my travels overseas … if you come from Bermuda you still hear reverberations of the Bermuda Triangle – ‘do you believe in the Bermuda Triangle?’ and ‘how about the Lost Squadron?’, and it just goes on and on.
“We do think that there are some nice photo opportunities which could be done incorporating the Bermuda Triangle.
“We say that Hamilton is Bermuda at its best, I don’t see why Hamilton can’t be the apex, or the epicentre of the Bermuda Triangle.
“There will be an unveiling in some regards in February, so stay tuned to this newspaper.”
Asked if he believed in the Bermuda Triangle legend, Mr Gosling said: “I just think it’s an extremely busy part of the globe. We are, what 700, 800 miles away from the US, we’re probably about 1,000 miles away, or probably even more, from Miami.
“There’s a lot of empty sea and everybody in Bermuda has an experience of having an absolutely gorgeous morning turning into a roaring gale by night time.
“And when you have conditions like that, you never know, you have got to be damn careful when you start getting out of sight of the island.”
