Repairs to historic gunpowder magazine start
Work to restore a wall around a historic gunpowder magazine in the East End park has started.
The St George’s Foundation announced last year that work would take place to protect the structure at Ferry Point Park, which has become increasingly vulnerable to storm damage.
The foundation said the magazine was used to store gunpowder for the nearby Martello tower and Ferry Island Fort, as well as other smaller forts located on St George's Island.
A spokesman said: “It could store 220 barrels of gunpowder. Today it is the finest example of gunpowder magazines built in Bermuda during the early 1800s.
“Some design aspects of the magazine are similar to the now-destroyed magazine not far from Tobacco Bay which was the site of the infamous gunpowder plot of 1775.”
