Financial assistance and the protection of families were some of the accomplishments claimed by the labour minister in a review of last year released today.

Jason Hayward said that the “major wins” came about last year despite the problems caused by the pandemic.

He added: "It has been our mission to ensure that we work strategically and mindfully to address the needs of Bermuda.

“As the Minister of Labour, I am proud of our advances thus far and I remain inspired for what is to come.”

The year-end review highlighted that the labour ministry set up and later extended a supplemental benefit scheme for people who faced unemployment, which handed out $1.05 million between April and November last year.

The ministry also offered more than $5 million in financial assistance and several employment programmes, such as paid internships through the graduate training programme and $350,000 in scholarships.

The review added that the ministry had removed a requirement for an affidavit of domicile for children born overseas to Bermudian parents, which made it easier for children to obtain Bermudian status.

Mr Hayward thanked ministry staff for their hard work in 2021.

He said: “This past year has been tumultuous and unpredictable for many, although we have remained resilient as a country.

“Each of us has a role to play in restoring our community, and this Government is committed to improving and protecting our island home."

Mr Hayward added: "Collectively, we look forward to building on these successes in 2022 and beyond through the implementation of Bermuda's Economic Recovery Plan."
