A teenager who admitted causing a traffic accident could be sentenced to community service instead of fined.

Magistrate Khamisi Tokunbo said a community service order could be considered for unemployed Nazye Matthie, 19, after he pleaded guilty to careless driving and failing to stop after an accident.

The court heard that Matthie, from Warwick, attempted to overtake a line of traffic on South Road, Smiths, just before the site of a one lane closure and was in collision with a car.

Matthie attempted to leave the scene of the crash, but collided with a pillar.

He later left the scene without giving his information, but witnesses had taken a note of his bike’s numberplate and police later arrested him.

The incident happened on June 6 last year.

Magistrate Khamisi Tokunbo ordered a social inquiry report to determine if Matthie would be suitable for community service.

He adjourned the case until February 18 and released Matthie on $1,000 bail.
