The Progressive Labour Party yesterday congratulated the Barbados Labour Party for its second “clean sweep” victory in a row in this week’s General Election.

The party singled out Mia Mottley, the country’s Prime Minister and the BLP leader, for helping her country move from a Commonwealth country, where the Queen remained as Head of State, to a republic.

A PLP spokeswoman said: “In doing so, she has proven that even a small island state can be confident and respected on the world stage.

“She and her team earned the confidence of the Barbados electorate and we send our best wishes to them as they begin their next term of governance.

“We look forward to working with Barbados directly and through Caricom to uplift our societies and empower our people.”

The BLP won all 30 seats in the Barbados House of Assembly, a repeat of its performance in 2018.

They went up against six other political parties, including a united political party that involved the People’s Party for Democracy and Development and the United Progressive Party, as well as nine independents.
