A failure to focus on the road ahead is as dangerous as drink-driving and speeding, the Bermuda Road Safety Council warned today.

The RSC said: “Being distracted and not giving your full attention to driving reduces your ability to be aware and recognise situations that may happen while driving.

“This is dangerous and an offence against the law – don’t do it.”

The RSC appealed to road users to maintain their concentration and to keep a safe distance from vehicles in front to give them time to react to the unexpected.

A driver’s reaction time was said to be three-quarters of a second – enough time to spot a problem, hit the brakes, and come to a stop safely.

The council told road users to “refocus on good driving behaviour” and reduce distractions.

The RSC said: “Don’t drink and drive, drive with care and caution, and slow down, Bermuda.”
