Prominent figures from social services and the arts will be honoured by the Hamilton Princess & Beach Club as part of Black History Month.

Martha Dismont, the founder and former director of Family Centre, and Gary Phillips, the chairman of the Bermuda National Gallery, were singled out for their contributions to the island.

Ms Dismont said she was touched and humbled by the accolade.

She added: “I am so pleased that we are able to take this opportunity to not only recognise the importance of Black history and culture but that of Black Bermudian history and culture.”

A portion of the proceeds from the event will go to charities picked by the pair – the Family Centre and the Bermuda College Foundation.

Mr Phillips said he was flattered and also happy to be able to use the opportunity to support the foundation.

The two will talk about their life and career experiences at the hotel’s Black History Month dinner.

Mr Phillips said: “Of course, as someone who has a keen interest in food, I am very much looking forward as well to the incredible five-course dinner menu, which I am pleased to have been able to help curate.

“I am confident that it will be a wonderful experience for everyone who comes.”

Dame Jennifer Smith, Sir John Swan, both former premiers; Ruth Thomas, a former teacher and guardian of Bermudian culture; Gil Tucker, a top accountant and HSBC director; and prominent historian Clarence Maxwell have been honoured by the hotel in the past.

Tim Morrison, the hotel’s general manager, said: “We are proud to continue our tradition of honouring Black History Month by recognising extraordinary Bermudians and their impact on our island home.

“We have something truly special planned for this year and we encourage people to book their tickets early to avoid disappointment – it will be a night to remember.”

The dinner is scheduled to be held on February 25.
