HSBC introduces a youth financial literacy programme

HSBC Bermuda and Planet Math are launching the HSBC Youth Financial Literacy Program with 120 of Bermuda’s students, across four middle schools.

As other schools are added, the programme will reach out to wider age groups and offer a broader range of topics.

HSBC said it is part of a long-term commitment to introduce and improve financial literacy education in the local community.

The bank has also launched the Youth Savings account and also a financial literacy hub to further support children as they develop their financial literacy skills.

Head of wealth and personal banking Tanya Bule said: “Through this programme students will learn the value of their money, how the management of their finances will have an impact on life decisions, the importance of saving and much, much more.

“We look forward to working with the youth of Bermuda to support their education and develop future skills which will drive not only their success as individuals but also the collective success of Bermuda as a whole.

“The team at Planet Math have a wonderful way of engaging with students and through providing tangible real life examples and coaching, are reinforcing core math principles, whilst making it fun.

“This is just what our schoolchildren need and a great avenue for our HSBC employees to join in and be proud to support.”

Founder-owner of Planet Math Sergio Pitcher said: “Planet Math aims to help the community while raising math awareness in Bermuda.

“This partnership with HSBC gives us the opportunity to help young people improve their personal financial literacy skills.

“Working with the HSBC Bermuda team has been an amazing experience. Their passion on raising financial literacy awareness matches Planet Math's passion for mathematics. This has made our partnership successful.

“Planet Math designed the lessons taking into account input from HSBC and will work with bank volunteers to facilitate an interactive, hands-on learning experience. We look forward to working with them as we continue to make a difference to our community.”
