Writers' Machine launches two books
The books, entitled "The Joe Mills Story -- A Local Labour Legend'', and "Triumph of the Spirit (Part I)'' were launched at the St. Paul AME Centennial Hall.
"The Joe Mills Story'', written by Dr. Eva Hodgson with research by Mr.
Butler, and an introduction by Mr. Ira Philip, tells the story of the local labour leader who died a few months ago. Mr. Butler says that the late Mr.
Mills was able to read a copy of the book prior to his death.
"Triumph of the Spirit'' is the first in a ten-part series highlighting the lives of Bermudians Lance Hayward, "Sir'' Stanley Burgess, Edith Crawford, Louisa Ella Gardiner-Richards, John G. Bassett, Charles Snaith, Dr. Kenneth E.
Robinson, Bernice Tankard, Valerie Scott and Rosalie Pearman Smith.
The biographies have been written by Writers' Machine members Dale Butler, Donald Scott, Cecily Snaith, Stuart Hayward, Margo Greene, Elizabeth Kawaley and Royal Gazette news editor Carol Parker-Trott. The introduction to the series is by Mr. Walton Brown, who lectures in Political Science at the Bermuda College.
