Jaden Masters ruled out of Concacaf Women’s World Cup qualifiers through injury

Naquita Robinson has been forced into at least one change to her starting line-up for the island’s second Concacaf Women’s World Cup qualifier group C match against the Cayman Islands at the IMG Academy in Bradenton, Florida, tonight (8pm).

The Bermuda coach confirmed that Jaden Masters has been ruled out for the rest of the tournament, having torn her left anterior cruciate ligament in the 4-0 loss against group favourites Jamaica in their opening match at the National Stadium in Kingston last week.

The central defender suffered the injury in a collision with Jamaica’s Khadija Shaw and in the 72nd minute had to be replaced.

“Unfortunately, Jaden has suffered an ACL tear and will be out for the rest of this tournament and the foreseeable future,” Robinson told The Royal Gazette. But we know that Jaden is a warrior, a soldier, and this too shall pass; she will come back stronger.”

Robinson revealed there are others in the squad also carrying knocks, which could potentially result in additional changes to her starting line-up.

“We have one expected change in replacing Jaden and we may have one or two others,” she added.

“There are some other players that are carrying some niggling injuries so other changes may be made.

“But at the end of the day we haven’t made that decision as yet besides the forced change in the centre-back position.”

Bermuda’s qualifying fate is now out of their own hands having suffered defeat against Jamaica, and with only the group winners advancing to the next stage of the competition, have no margin for error.

“To some extent I would say it is out of our hands,” Robinson said. “But if we beat Dominican and the Dominican turn around and beat Jamaica, that would mean that we will all have one loss, and who knows what can happen from that.

“So we have to take one game at a time and just hope some things swing in our favour.

“Every game is important in the entire process right down to our last match that we play on April 8.

“We have a lot of football ahead of us and so in the advancement in this group to the next round in July our players are very confident and our hopes are still alive.

“It’s not over until it’s over and so we’re in a very good space heading into this next match and we’re confident enough in getting the desired outcome.”

Cayman Islands are also coming off a 4-0 loss against the Dominican Republic in their group opener at the Truman Bodden Sports Complex in George Town.

While Bermuda are the favourites going into tonight’s match, Robinson is not taking anything for granted in what will be the first meeting between the countries in women’s international football.

“Obviously, we don’t rate the Caymans at the same level that we rate Jamaica but having said that we don’t underestimate any opponent,” she said.

“We haven’t played the Cayman Islands before, so I don’t have anything to go on but never underestimating any team.

“I have full confidence in our team but I don’t rate them in a sense of ‘yeah, we played Jamaica and this is the result and we’re now going to smash Cayman’.

“We are going to play a competitive match and look forward to the outcome in our favour. We haven’t seen the Cayman Islands play; we haven’t played them so we have to respect them.”

Robinson says morale remains high among her players despite coming off a heavy loss to Jamaica.

“The morale among the group is really good; they are ready for the next one,” she added.

“They understood what we were trying to do [against Jamaica], and how we were set up to play, which was executed.

“We lost 4-0 but if we’re honest we played extremely well and we frustrated Jamaica for the majority of that match.

“They [Jamaica] were arguing with themselves way more than we were arguing.

“I don’t think we were arguing and spent a lot of time in the match encouraging one another and playing.”
