The lead pastor of a church where two vehicles burst into flames in the early hours of yesterday said he wanted to work with the police to ensure public safety.

Jonathan Lambe added he was not sure if the two vehicles were set on fire on purpose, but admitted he was aware of tensions in the area.

Mr Lambe said: “I woke up and heard something and then smelt something burning. I was startled to say the least and as soon as we saw the fire we called 911.

“We are grateful for the swift response of the fire service.”

The incident happened at the Evening Light Pentecostal Church on Parson’s Road, Pembroke, at about 2.20am.

Mr Lambe said: “Fortunately, no one was hurt. There was just the vehicle damage.

“I am trying to get details from the police. We are praying for our community. We know there are some things that need to change and we want to make sure this is a safe place.”

Mr Lambe, who lives near the church with his wife, added: “We believe in our community and believe in the people of our community and we are looking to work with police and those who are concerned for our parish and our community.

“We are looking to get some cameras, improve our security and connect with police to make sure our community is safe. That is our No 1 priority.”

The burning vehicles, which belonged to members of the public, were extinguished by firefighters.
