Red Cross appeals for donations to help people in Ukraine
A disaster appeal has been launched by the Bermuda Red Cross for a humanitarian crisis in Ukraine, where a conflict rages in the wake of Russia’s invasion.
The charity is appealing for donations as the conflict deepens across the country in Europe’s worst fighting since the Second World War.
Ann Spencer-Arscott, the executive director, said: “We are gravely concerned about the intensification of fighting in Ukraine over the past few days.
“People are losing their homes and lives; families are being separated.
“Essential services like water and healthcare are under threat.
“Please donate today if you can.”
She said people caught in the turmoil were in need of support and protection.
“Even before recent developments, this eight-year conflict has hit people daily on all levels.
“It's brought suffering, death, injury and separation from loved ones, as well as the huge mental toll of ongoing violence and insecurity.”
Ms Spencer-Arscott said the Red Cross feared further escalation would worsen “an already appalling humanitarian situation and wreak havoc on more lives”.
She added: “As the security situation allows, the Ukrainian Red Cross Society and the International Committee of the Red Cross will continue to respond to existing and emerging humanitarian needs.
“The Red Cross has supported people affected by this conflict for years and this will not stop now.”
She told the community that donations would help get food, water, first aid and medicine, warm clothing and shelter to people caught up in the crisis.
“Your donation will mean we can reach even more people in desperate need,” she said.
“Please donate today.”
Donations can be made by direct deposit into the Butterfield bank account 20 006 060 663859 200.
The public can also go online here to donate by debit or credit card.
The charity will also take card details at 236-8253, Monday through Friday, between 8.30am and 4pm.
Donations can be made in person or by post to the office at the Bermuda Red Cross Ukraine Crisis Appeal, 9 Berry Hill Road, Paget DV03.
