Bermuda head coach Naquita Robinson is hopeful her team will get a chance to play an upcoming Concacaf Women’s World Cup qualifier at home next month, in what she described as an opportunity to grow women’s football on island.

Bermuda lost 4-0 to group favourites Jamaica in Kingston on February 17, in a performance that won them many admirers, before going on to thrash the Cayman Islands 6-0 in a “home” match played at the IMG Academy in Florida.

They are scheduled to face Dominican Republic on April 8 before hosting Grenada four days later. However, it is yet to be determined whether or not that match will be played in Bermuda, given Covid-19 restriction and other factors.

Robinson believes playing in front of their home fans will provide a welcome boost not only to the players themselves, but to the women’s programme in general.

“I think it would be a treat to play against Grenada in Bermuda,” Robinson said.

“It would be very special and the crowd would be treated to a performance that they probably have never seen from a Bermuda team

“My prayer is that we continue to do what we have to do as a country so that the Government says’ ‘yes we want to showcase our women’s national team’.

“If any team deserves to play in front of its home crowd, it is this team. I have so much respect for these young ladies.”

Captain Eva Frazzoni also supported the idea of facing Grenada in Bermuda, underlining that the match could serve as a major motivator for future national players.

“To be able to play in Bermuda, show the younger girls, show male and female what we are about would be good,” she said.

“To see it on film is one thing but to see it in person is another and our family and friends and even people who might not even know what we are about would be able to come there.

“I have played in Bermuda and the atmosphere is really indescribable.

“I would love that for a lot of these girls who did not get that chance and I really do hope that us as a country and our government will see that and we will keep working together so that this is a possibility because it really would mean everything for us and so much for the game.

“The best game I have ever played was in Bermuda. I really hope that Bermuda does that for us so that we can show the nation what we are made of.

“The women’s game is growing globally but also it would help to motivate and inspire young females that they, too, can eventually get to this level.”

Meanwhile, with the team sitting in third in their group on three points from their two games — three behind Dominican Republic and Jamaica — Robinson says she has already seen enough from the team to suggest that they are heading in the right direction.

“The Jamaica performance propelled these girls to victory [against the Cayman Islands],” said Robinson.

“I can guarantee you that they brought that momentum into that match.

“I tip my hat to the young ladies. They had to get up to play the Cayman Islands and the last two performances will definitely get us up for the last two matches of the group.

“It’s easy to look at the scoreline of the Jamaica match and of course we are disappointed because we wanted to win but we were not disappointed in what we showed.

“It is encouraging and motivating and this team is so ready to keep going from that.”
