BMA reports new phishing scheme to police
A fraudulent e-mail targeting people in Bermuda’s financial services industries has been reported to local law enforcement after giving the impression that it is coming from the Bermuda Monetary Authority.
The authority said it was made aware of it today and that it gives the appearance of originating from accounting@bma.bm and includes the subject line: “Reminder: Unpaid Invoice!”
The authority clarified that it is not a legitimate e-mail address for the BMA.
It said: “The fraudulent e-mail misappropriates the name of the Authority and attempts to trick recipients into providing information about any outstanding balances owed to the Authority.
“A report has been filed with the Bermuda Police Service.
“The Authority wishes to advise the public that it would not make this request, and that any e-mails that make this request should be regarded as phishing attempts and that the public should avoid clicking on any links within these e-mails.”
