Adrian Roach has added incentive to put his best foot forward at the upcoming American Boxing Confederation Championships in Guayaquil, Ecuador.

The orthodox fighter is competing for a share of the prize money, which he intends to donate to Controversy Gym to help upgrade the Pembroke facility, if he is successful.

As well as bragging rights, the medallists in each of the respective weight classes at the championships will earn prize money, with the winners to pocket $10,000, runners up $5,000 and third-place finishers $2,500.

“If I win that I would look to put it back in Leo’s [head coach Leo Richardson] gym help to get some new upgrades,” Roach told The Royal Gazette. “It’s $10,000 for first-place winner, so we would be able to do a lot with that down at the gym.”

The Crandall University student is Bermuda’s sole representative at the event, to be held from March 22 to April 2, and will be accompanied by head boxing coach Jon Ohlhauser.

“It’s important having your coach that you’ve been working with in the training camp to come with you at events such as this,” Roach added.

“We have built a good relationship over the past few fights that we’ve had together.”

The 19-year-old secured an unanimous points decision against Canadian Jack Cabotaje in his previous outing in the ring at the Epic Entertainment Fight Night Champion at The Shed, Dockyard, in January.

With the championships in Ecuador fast approaching, he has stepped up his preparations and is leaving no stone unturned in hot pursuit of his goals.

“We are ticking all boxes,” Roach said.

“I am working with a nutritionist to make sure my weight is good, a strength conditioning coach and the regular team doing my miles road work and things like that. I am training hard and picking up the intensity in the gym.

“I am taking all steps to ensure my success in the tournament and I think my chances are great. If I come with my ‘A’ game then anything is possible.”
