David Maycock will be keen to make further inroads after clearing the first hurdle at the Lubbock Sports Open in Texas yesterday.

The Bermudian was among the 29 players who advanced from a six-game qualifier to the main event at the South Plains Lanes.

“I am extremely happy with my performance,” Maycock, who had a total series score of 1289, told The Royal Gazette. “I just tried to stay in my own lane; stay to the task of what I was doing and not get caught up watching everybody.

Just make my shots, make my moves and that’s what I did.”

Maycock’s hopes of reaching the tournament proper hung in the balance heading into the sixth and final game of the qualifier.

“I saw the scores and knew I needed a steady game in the last game six and I just stayed focused,” he added. “I was right on the bubble but I ended up finishing 25th, so I’m in the cut for tomorrow.

“Bonus bowling tomorrow. I am going to practice on a different pattern for awhile and then we start our main tournament.”

Thomas Kayhko, of Finland, won the qualifying event with an overall series score of 1451.

Six-game qualifying rounds are scheduled for today with the top 24 players advancing to the final stage tomorrow.

Among the stellar names expected to be challenging for the title and the $20,000 first-place windfall are E.J. Tackett, who teamed with Marshall Kent for the Roth-Holman Doubles championship on March 7, and Kyle Sherman, who got his first career singles victory in the Cheetah Championship.

The event is the first of back-to-back appearances for Maycock on the Professional Bowlers Association Tour in the United States as he is also scheduled to compete at the Colorado Springs Open.

The tournament will be held at the Harmony Bowl, where Maycock will participate in another six-game qualifier to compete in the main event.

“I have to bowl the qualifying rounds first to get into the tournaments because I don’t bowl on the Tour full-time, so I don’t have enough points,” he said.

The Colorado Springs Open will be held from March 22 to 24.
