Community and sports clubs have been awarded $175,000 from the Government's confiscated assets and capital development grant programme.

Cheques were presented by David Burt, the Premier and finance minister, to clubs to upgrade facilities, buy new equipment and offer youth programmes.

Bermuda Bowling Club and Paddle with Purpose each received $12,500 from the confiscated asset fund for youth programmes.

Hamilton Parish Workman's Club and Devonshire Recreation Club each received $25,000 from the capital development fund – respectively for upgrades of the club exterior, and for landscaping as well as improvements for public restrooms.

Harrington Workmen's Club was awarded $25,000 from the capital development fund to help with a full renovation of the clubhouse.

Bailey's Bay Cricket Club received $50,000 from the capital development fund for new fencing, a new synthetic practice wicket, and new training equipment.

Leopard's Club received $25,000 to assist with upgrades to their flooring.

Mr Burt, who presented the cash awards last Friday, said the scheme was in line with the Progressive Labour Party’s 2020 election platform.

He added clubs had been hit hard by the Covid-19 pandemic.

Mr Burt also attended the Harrington Workman’s Club’s ribbon-cutting ceremony over the weekend after the completion of extensive renovations.

The work included the construction of a family-friendly meeting area separate from the bar.

The club has been given a total of $125,000 in capital development grants.

Capital development assistance totalling $1.03 million has been awarded to 22 community clubs.

A total of $149,500 from the confiscated asset fund has been handed over to support youth programmes in 12 organisations.
