Tiny therapy horse Tilly memorialised in sculptures to raise cash for charity
A herd of life-size sculptures of a beloved Bermuda horse will be up for auction at a charity fundraising event this month.
Tilly, a miniature horse that died in November, was a fixture at the WindReach centre for the disabled’s animal therapy zone.
Now 20 life-size statues of Tilly decorated by island artists and volunteers will be sold off to raise funds for the Warwick-based charity.
Tina Nash, the WindReach executive director, said: “We were devastated to lose Tilly last year. She was a pillar of our therapeutic programming.
“It is fitting that her spirit will continue in these sculptures which we hope will bring fond memories and some solace.”
“We are so grateful to all of the artists for creating a legacy for her.
“For 24 years she was a comfort and gentle teacher to many of our participants.
“We look forward to residents and visitors enjoying these specially embellished sculptures and generously supporting the auction.
“We also invite the public to use the hashtag #WindReachBermuda when taking pictures and posting them to social media.”
The WindReach board began planning the Tilly’s Filly Fundraiser event at the end of 2020 and sent measurements and photographs of the horse to a company in the US that made exact replicas in fibreglass.
Tilly died in November after 24 years of service and the event is being held as a celebration of her life.
The 20 sculptures will be on display at Washington Mall in Hamilton from April 8 and will go under the hammer at the WindReach covered arena in Warwick on April 29.
The auction is scheduled to start at 6pm and tickets cost $25.
Money raised from the event will go towards WindReach educational and therapy programmes.
