Robin Horsfield is satisfied with his efforts after capturing a third Winners Edge Mountain Bike Championship title in convincing fashion at Southlands Park yesterday.

The 22-year-old showed complete control as he led the entire race in the Open Men’s division, crossing the finish line in 56 mins 41 secs having rounded the slippery course seven times, with the chasing pack nowhere in sight.

“I am very pleased to reclaim my title as Bermuda national champion,” Horsfield told The Royal Gazette.

“The course out there was great, I love the conditions. The little bit of rain last night made the track a little tough, which suited me a little bit, but everyone went out there and they all put in their best effort, which was great to see.

“The event was very well organised and I really enjoyed riding it.”

Horsfield won a maiden title in 2019, which he successfully defended the following year. He did not compete last year.

Chris Nusum, who also completed seven laps, finished second in 1:14.43, while McQuinn Burch took third after completing six laps in 1:15.43 to round off the podium positions in the Open Men’s division.

Cassandra McPhee was also comfortable in winning the Open Women’s division after finishing four laps in 48:02. McPhee could not be reached for comment.

Ashley Robinson was second in 54:00 flat and Jennifer Lightbourne too third place in 57.53. The top-three finishers all completed four laps.

James Holloway won the Masters Men’s title after clocking 47:34 in his five laps, with Hans Hirschi (48:02) and multiple Bermuda Day Half Marathon winner Kavin Smith (48:21) placing second and third respectively. All but two of the seventeen competitors in the Masters division completed five lap.

Cameron Morris completed four laps in 39:49 to clinch the Junior Men’s title. He was followed by Manning Smith (43:07) in second and Gordon Smith (43:08) in third, who both also completed four laps.

Skye Ferguson. who navigated three laps in 52:41 was the sole competitor in the Junior Women’s race.

Meanwhile, Bermuda Bicycle Association president, Peter Dunne was happy with the day’s activities and was particularly pleased with the venue for yesterday’s competition.

“As always, the spectacular Southlands property was an ideal host location,” said Dunne.

“All the clearing work done recently by Parks has made the property more accessible and created new riding options.”
