The Bermuda Red Cross has raised more than $370,000 for the Ukraine Crisis Appeal, it was revealed tonight.

The Bermuda-based Peter Cundhill Foundation, set up to promote the welfare of children, donated $100,000 towards the $372,234 total.

Ann Spencer-Arscott, the executive director of the Bermuda Red Cross, said: “We are so humbled by the amazing support received from people from all walks of life in Bermuda.”

She told the public: “These are tough times for many. If you can drop coins or bills in the many buckets that have been set up around the island, that makes a difference to someone else who has nothing.”

The island’s Red Cross has sent $190,000 to its British counterpart so the cash can be forwarded to the international federation which is in charge of the Ukraine fund.

Maksym Dotsenko, the director-general of the Ukrainian Red Cross, added: “Many of our staff and volunteers are also experiencing the conflict first-hand.

“They are worried about their families and their safety, and yet they continue to put on the Red Cross vest to deliver critical aid to neighbours and strangers alike.

“This is the true spirit of the principle of volunteerism upon which the Red Cross is based.”
