The former World Heritage Centre in St George could get a new lease of life as a brewery and tap room.

A planning application by Moongate Brewery proposed that the building be remodelled as a brew house and a beer hall on its lower floor with the front desk used for merchandise sales.

The upper floor would be used as a lounge, event space and for dry storage.

The building, the Queen’s Warehouse, was built in the 1860s to store cargo unloaded from ships.

It was converted into the World Heritage Centre in 2006, but had its official opening ceremony in 2009.

The centre hosted a range of displays about Bermuda’s heritage and history.

But the St George’s Foundation, which managed the attraction, struggled to raise funds to keep the site open in the wake of the 2008 recession and a reduction in visitor traffic.

The World Heritage Centre shut its doors early in 2020 because of the Covid-19 pandemic.

It was announced later that year that it would not reopen.
