Foggo claims Safe Hands Award

Safe hands: St. George's wicketkeeper Chris Foggo takes a catch to dismiss Deunte Darrell in Cup Match at Wellington Oval last week. Foggo received the annual Safe Hands Award for the superb dismissal.

St. George's Cup Match wicketkeeper Chris Foggo joined Somerset's Janeiro Tucker as the only two-time winners of the Cup Match Classic Safe Hands Award after his sterling job behind the stumps for the champions.

Foggo was awarded the Calvin 'Bummy' Symonds Cup at an award ceremony held by the Butterfield Bank in conjunction with Black Star Communications, organisers of the award.

The prolific wicketkeeper snatched five catches during last week's classic at Wellington Oval.

Foggo earned the trophy with his superb catch to dismiss Deunte Darrell off the bowling of Justin Pitcher in the Somerset's second innings.

"It's a great privilege for me, a real honour," said Foggo.

"It's just nice to be down in the record books to show that all your hard work does pay off.

"Hopefully I can go one better and be the first to three Safe Hands Awards.

"The catch was the most exciting I've taken being in the situation I was in and the fact it was Cup Match.

"A lot of difficult catches have come my way and have been taken.

"I have played a lot of cricket in my time but this one is special as it was such a big stage and the pressure Cup Match brings.

"For the remainder of the season I want to remain consistent with my club, Devonshire Rec., and to be available for the national squad as well as my County side, St. David's.

"So, whoever my teams come against must worry, especially those in the Counties."

The Devonshire Rec. wicketkeeper also claimed a one thousand dollar cheque, a trip for two to the US, a new playing kit courtesy of the Calvin "Bummy" Symonds' family, dinner for two at Greg's steakhouse and one hundred dollars worth of phone cards.

Butterfield Bank president Alan Thompson said: "I congratulate St. George's Cup Match player Chris Foggo on his successful fielding display for which he won the Cup Match Safe Hands Award for 2009.

"Mr. Foggo was judged to have been the best overall fielder over the course of the two day classic, which resulted in him taking five catches behind the stumps. One of which, resulting in the dismissal of Deunte Darrell on the second day of play, is now being recognised as one of the best catches in Cup Match for some time.

"Foggo also had an overall solid fielding performance over the course of the two-day match."

On hand at the ceremony were Black Star Communication's head Ralph Commisiong, Alan Thompson, CEO and President of Butterfield Bank and Calvin Symonds.
