Annual Police Rugby Duckett memorial matches make return
The Annual Police Rugby Duckett memorial matches are set to resume from a two-year hiatus brought on by the global Covid -19 pandemic.
The island’s oldest rugby event will take place at the Police Recreational Club on Saturday and will again feature both men’s and women’s teams.
“This is the highlight of our season and we are extremely happy to be able to host the Duckett Memorial games again after 2 years where the pandemic prevented our club day from taking place” Adam Richards, chairman of the Police Rugby Club, said.
“We are looking forward to some quality rugby to close out the domestic season. Statistically, we shouldn’t win when you look at the strength of all the opposition teams. However, the decades of results show that Police are dominant in this fixture, and this year we are hoping to add more success.”
The annual games are played in memory of former Commissioner of Police, George Duckett, who was assassinated in 1972.
He was a popular, larger than life individual who had a commanding presence standing at 6’5” tall and was well known as an ardent rugby fan.
In 1973, the Bermuda Police Rugby Section commenced an annual game in his honour which is the longest running memorial game in Bermuda.
Serving Officers, former colleagues and rugby fans across the Island are welcome to continue to show their respect by attending this sporting tradition.
The event will kick off at 2pm with the BPRFC Ladies first team squaring off against The Rest.
Action then continues with the BPRFC men’s side doing battle against the BRFU Presidents XV at 3pm.
The trophy presentation will be held at 5pm on the field with refreshments available at the club afterwards.
Despite the challenges brought on by the Covid-19 pandemic, the association managed to complete their league campaign under trying circumstances, with a combined team of Renegades and Mariners players claiming the men’s title and Police the women’s.
