Reggie Lambe thunderbolt puts Stowmarket Town’s league campaign back on track

Reggie Lambe with Stowmarket Town

Reggie Lambe scored a sensational goal to inspire Stowmarket Town to a 2-1 victory away to Witham Town in the Isthmian League North on Saturday.

The Bermuda midfielder broke the deadlock at Simarco Stadium with a thumping 40-yard strike in the fifteenth minute to give the visitors the lead.

The goal was Lambe’s eighth of the season and first since scoring in Town’s 3-3 draw away to Hashtag United in the league on March 19.

Irish defender Chris Casement then doubled the Suffolk team’s advantage when he beat Witham goalkeeper Rhys Madden from 20-yards right on the stroke of half-time.

The hosts rallied after the interval and pulled one back through striker Amaree Robinson-Jones’s 65th-minute strike that set the stage for an intense final 25 minutes.

Essex side Witham pressed hard for the equaliser but were held at bay by Town goalkeeper James Bradbrook who made a couple of superb saves and was backed up by some excellent goal line defending.

Lambe’s compatriot, Willie Clemons, did not feature in the match as he is serving a two-game suspension which, coupled with injuries, forced manager Paul Musgrove to tweak his starting eleven.

The win was Town’s first in the league since edging fellow promotion hopefuls Grays Athletic 1-0 at Greens Meadow on March 12, with Clemons grabbing the game-winner in that contest.

The result saw Musgrove’s team capitalise on league leaders Aveley’s loss to Hashtag on Friday night to keep their outside chance of landing the title alive.

Town are third in the standings, four points behind Aveley and two adrift of second-placed Canvey Island with four games left to play.

The eventual league winners will gain automatic promotion while the next four teams will contest a play-off for the remaining promotion spot.
