Bermuda enjoyed another fruitful outing in the pool at the Carifta Swimming Championships in Wildey, Barbados, yesterday.

The island’s swimmers came away with four more medals to take their overall tally at the Barbados Aquatic Centre to 12 with two days of competition remaining.

Arabella Newport Derbyshire was the biggest winner on the day having won the gold medal in the girls 11 to 12 200 metres butterfly with a time of 2 min 39.10sec.

“Right before the 200 fly I had my 100 free, so I was quite a bit tired before the race,” she told The Royal Gazette.

“For 200 fly this is the first time I did it in long course. But I have done it before on short course, so I kind of knew what to expect.

“I was ranked first so I was hoping to get on the podium, but I really didn’t expect a gold medal.”

She added: “For the first hundred I tried to keep my leg stroke relaxed and stuff like that. But on like the third 50 I tried to speed up and thought I saw someone right behind me and I didn’t want her to beat me. So I tried to speed up a bit faster and keep my legs kicking.

“Then the last 50 I was so tired and I tried not to breathe too much because that makes me more tired. I just tried to do a fast finish to the end.”

Derbyshire is one of the youngest members on Bermuda’s team at 12 years-old.

Also earning spots on the podium on day three of competition were siblings Bella and Marleigh Howes.

Bella, the elder of the sisters, earned a silver medal in the girls 15 to 17 100 freestyle with a time of 59.46.

Marleigh claimed silver in the girls 13 to 14 100 freestyle in 1:00.85, to take her personal medal haul to two having clinched gold in the 200 freestyle.

Senior team member Sam Williamson continued his sparkling form by earning bronze in the boys 15 to 17 50 breaststroke with a time of 30.84.

It was the 17-year-old’s third individual medal at the meet having won the gold in the 200 breaststroke and 400 individual medley.

Williamson has also enjoyed success as a member of the island’s team that earned bronze medals in the boys 15 to 17 4 x100 freestyle relay and 15 to 17 4x100 medley relay, which also included Finn Moseley, Flynn Watson-Brown and Brandon Adkins.

Myeisha Sharrieff and Violet Smith are the remaining teams members to have also clinched medals at the championships.

Sharrieff, who is making her debut at the event, won bronze in the 100 backstroke, while Smith claimed a pair of silver medals in the 11 to 12 girls 100 and 50 backstroke.
