Daniel Augustus gutted after final-hole double bogey scuppers breakthrough title

Daniel Augustus achieved his best finish on the APGA Tour after finishing runner-up in Scottsdale, Arizona, this week

Daniel Augustus narrowly missed out on a maiden APGA Tour victory competing in Scottsdale, Arizona, this week.

The Bermudian finished second to Michael Herrera, from California, after relinquishing the lead on the final hole of the 36-hole event played at the TPC Scottsdale Champions Course.

Despite his struggles with consistency, Augustus clung to a one-shot advantage over the rest of the field heading to the 460-yard, par-four 18 on Tuesday.

However, his fortunes took a turn for the worse when he carded a second double bogey of the round from 30 feet, which ultimately put paid to his title hopes.

The 34-year-old closed with a three-under 139 to finish one shot adrift of the charging Herrera, whose three-under 68 was the second-lowest of the day.

“A bit disappointed. I really wanted to win, but it was not my time yet,” Augustus told The Royal Gazette.

“I struggled a little bit second round. Got it back to even through 16 holes, made a great par save on 17 and then 18 I made a double coming in.

“I hit the wrong chip shot and then proceeded to three-putt from about 30 feet being too passive, believe it or not.”

Augustus’s two-over 73 also included three birdies and a bogey.

The Ocean View Golf Club professional started the day in pole position after a blistering opening round of 66 earned him a one-shot advantage over Kevin Hall, from Ohio.

His bogey-free round contained five birdies, three of which arrived on the front nine.

“The first round I hit the ball well,” Augustus added. “I hit 16 greens to give myself a lot of good looks for birdie.

“I didn’t make a lot of putts but gave myself a lot of good looks. It was a good round.”

However, momentum was lost over the remaining 18 holes.

“The second round obviously a little bit tighter, more nerves involved in the final group,” Augustus said.

“I need to become more comfortable being in the final group in bigger events. I have won other events in the United States being in the final group. It didn’t work out here, but I know that I can do it — my time is coming.

“I am just going to continue to grind, practise and trust the process that I am going through. The results are going to come as they are. And it is only going to get better, so I am just going to continue to stick to it.”

This week’s showing in Arizona was Augustus’s best on the APGA Tour and also his third successive top-five finish, having tied for fifth at the Queens Harbour Yacht and Country Club in Jacksonville, Florida, and at TPC Louisiana in Avondale, Louisiana, last month.
