Former UK Lord Chancellor lined up to speak

Event speaker: Britain’s former Foreign Secretary and Lord Chancellor Jack Straw will give a keynote address at a conference in Bermuda next month

Jack Straw, a former leading British politician, is to give a keynote address at a trusts law conference in Bermuda.

Mr Straw, a barrister, is to speak on the topic ‘An Unstable World? — Instability and how Political and Economic Risk is Currently Impacting on the Private Client World’.

He will give the address at the Transcontinental Trusts: International Forum at the Hamilton Princess, which runs from June 5 to 7.

As the Labour MP for Blackburn, Mr Straw sat in the House of Commons from 1979 until 2015.

Now 72, Mr Straw variously served as Home Secretary, Foreign Secretary and Lord Chancellor and Secretary of State for Justice as a member of Cabinet from 1997-2010 under prime ministers Tony Blair and Gordon Brown.

He is currently a visiting professor at University College London School of Public Policy.

More than 300 delegates from the United Kingdom, United States, Channel Islands, Caribbean and Bermuda are expected to attend the fifth annual conference.

The meetup is colloquially referred to as ‘Trans Trust Bermuda’, which organisers bill as the ‘must-attend private client event of the year’.

The conference will address the broad issues of ‘stability and security and planning in the modern world’, and ‘family and contentious issues’ in a variety of sessions over two days.

Organisers say the conference will take a cross-border approach to providing solutions to the most complex of private client issues.

The conference co-chairs are Jonathan Conder of London law firm Macfarlanes and Basil Zirinis of New York firm Sullivan & Cromwell.

Organisers have lined up more than 70 speakers for the event, including Attorney-General Kathy Lynn Simmons, Minister of Finance Curtis Dickinson, and Andy Burrows, chief executive officer of conference lead sponsor, the Bermuda Business Development Agency.

Representatives of Bermuda’s private sector to speak at the conference will include Appleby partners Carlos de Serpa Pimentel and Alison MacKrill; Conyers, Dill & Pearman partners Jeffrey Elkinson, Craig MacIntyre and Scott Pearman; Carey Olsen partner Keith Robinson; Alison Dyer-Fagundo, managing director at Estera; and Charmaine Tucker, managing director-Bermuda, Lombard Odier Trust (Bermuda) Limited.

Arabella di Iorio, co-founder of Agon Litigation, in the British Virgin Islands, is also scheduled to speak at the conference. She formerly worked at Appleby in Bermuda.
