After a two year absence due to the Covid-19 pandemic, World Asthma Day returned to Bermuda yesterday.

Musicians from Warwick Academy expanded their lungs to play wind and brass instruments while Open Airways staff and volunteers demonstrated equipment for asthma sufferers and gave advice.

World Asthma Day is celebrated around the world on the first Tuesday in May and is aimed at promoting awareness about the condition, which kills 1,000 people around the world evry day but can be largely controlled with access to the correct inhalers and knowledge.

To mark World Asthma Day, the charity distributed bundles of information for school pupils.

They included a voucher for a free pillow for each primary student on the 2021-22 school asthma registry, which is a joint effort by Open Airways, the Department of Health, the Ministry of Education and the King Edward VII Memorial Hospital’s Asthma Education Centre.

A spokeswoman said: “All students with asthma should add their names to this annual registry so that our team can better assist in distributing vital asthma information and care.”
