Holders of youth driver’s licences have been reminded they could face a six-month ban from the roads and a $300 fine if they ignore crucial traffic laws.

Police highlighted that cyclists aged under 18 are not allowed to carry or “tow” a passenger or be on the roads between 1am and 5am.

Those who break these laws can face fines and road bans, and could have five to seven demerit points added to their licences.

Police Inspector Darren Glasford, the head of the Roads Policing Unit, said: “It has been noticed recently that many riders under the age of 18 are not following these rules.

“This reminder is intended to promote voluntary compliance.

“Overall, our goal is not to be punitive – but where police officers encounter offences being committed, our duty is to appropriately enforce the law.”
