Bermuda track and field received a ringing endorsement after promising sprinter Caitlyn Bobb secured awards on the back of a stellar display on her debut at the America East Conference Outdoor Championships.

The University of Maryland, Baltimore County freshman walked away with rookie of the year, most outstanding track performer and coaches awards after record setting and medal winning performance at the event, hosted by the University of Vermont at the weekend.

“Winning the rookie award was very surprising,” Bobb told The Royal Gazette.

“The selection of the winner was determined by peers, and I do not have social media to promote myself or gain media exposure, so I felt at a disadvantage. I put the matter in God’s hands and was grateful for the nomination.

“I aspire to continue to represent God, Bermuda, UMBC, and my family well.

“May I bring all honour, praise and glory to the heavenly father.”

Bobb won the gold medal in the 400 and 200 metres, breaking two school, and a meet record along the way.

She led the field across the line in the 400 in a school record time of 53.36 seconds.

The 2021 junior female athlete of the year then won the 200 with a school and meet record of 24.44.

She was also a member of her school’s 4x400 relay team that won gold in meet record time of 3min 39.24sec.

“I am very grateful and thankful,” Bobb added. “It’s only getting better and better.”

The University of Maryland, Baltimore County finished third overall at the championships, their best showing since 2016. Bobb then capped a stellar season by receiving the rookie of the year and indoor and outdoor awards during her school’s athletic banquet on Monday.

The 19-year-old also left her mark on her debut at the America East Indoor Track and Field Championships at Boston University in February, having broken Bermuda records as well as a school record with personal best times on the way to claiming victory in the 200 and 400.

She also claimed a gold medal as a member of her school’s team that won the 4 x 400m relay and set a new America East Conference record in the process.

Bobb eclipsed Debbie Jones’s 42-year-old national indoor record in the 200 after breaking the tape in 24.02. She then slashed two seconds off her own national record on the way to winning the 400 in 53.50, which was also a school record.

Bobb earned a third gold medal after anchoring her school’s 4 x 400m relay team to victory in a new conference record time of 3min 44.39secs.

The talented athlete has also enjoyed success competing for Bermuda on the international stage, having won bronze medals in the under-20 girls 400 and as a member of the 4 x 400 relay team at the Carifta Games in Kingston, Jamaica, last month.
