Another person has died from Covid-19 in the past week, bringing the total number of fatalities from the virus to 138.

In a statement, Kim Wilson, the Minister of Health, last night extended her condolences to the family and friends of the deceased, adding: “There is still a lot of Covid-19 in the community, especially among schoolchildren.”

There were 313 positive results recorded from 9,800 tests carried out since last Wednesday – a positivity rating of three per cent.

In addition, there were 360 recoveries since last week’s update, bringing the number of active cases down to 312.

Of the active cases, 45 are imported while 59 are classified as local transmission. A further 208 are under investigation.

There are now eight people in hospital with the virus, and one in intensive care. The remaining 304 cases are under public health monitoring.

Ms Wilson added: “As we head into the long holiday weekend, I urge everyone to please follow public health guidelines.

“While you are out and about enjoying the Bermuda Day festivities, don’t let your guard down. Continue to wear your mask indoors, and outdoors if you cannot physically distance yourself.

“Wash your hands frequently, use hand sanitiser, and take antigen tests before you socialise. If you test positive, please stay home.”

Tonight’s update did not give any information on the latest vaccination statistics, which have remained static in the last two weeks.

The Royal Gazette this week received reports from a number of people who claimed they had not been able to obtain booster shots of the vaccine.

The Ministry of Health did not respond to questions from this newspaper about a potential shortage of vaccine supplies by press time.

Tonight’s figures came after the island recorded 360 actives cases on May 18, as well as coronavirus-related deaths – with five people in hospital but none in intensive care.
