The Bermuda Underwater Exploration Institute is aiming to make a big splash on World Oceans Day.

It will link-up with 260 students and 18 schools this week to mark the environmental awareness occasion.

Schools across the island have been invited to participate in a one-hour interactive tour with BUEI’s education team.

Students and teachers will be led through the ocean discovery centre to explore BUEI’s newest exhibits, portholes of discovery, and the seagrass restoration project.

The portholes of discovery experience explores Bermuda through the eyes of photographers, researchers, and artists.

The restoration project exhibit, a collaboration with Bermuda’s Department of Environment and Natural Resources, highlights the role of seagrass meadows in producing a healthy marine ecosystem and the impact of green turtle grazing on the local habitat.

Karla Lacey, of the BUEI, said: “World Oceans Day is the perfect opportunity to reflect on the importance of our oceans and the urgency to conserve this vital resource.

“Nurturing greater appreciation for our ocean is of the utmost importance to us, and providing this opportunity for peer-to-peer conversations surrounding the health of the ocean is invaluable.

“On behalf of BUEI, I would like to thank all involved in creating this event, and recognise the great work being done by the students participating in the youth climate summit and eco-schools programme.”
