US Coast Guard training ship Eagle to visit Bermuda
One of the world’s most recognisable tall ships, the US Coast Guard Cutter Eagle is to visit Bermuda next week.
The ship will be moored along Front Street from July 8 to July 12 and will be open for free public tours from Friday, July 8 to Monday, July 11 between 11am and 7pm.
Eagle, which is used as a training vessel for future officers of the US Coast Guard, is coming to Bermuda as part of its 2022 summer training deployment.
While in port, cadets will participate in community outreach activities with the Sandys Boat Club Youth Sailing Programme and Bermuda Zoological Society on Trunk Island.
The summer 2022 deployment spans five months, stopping at nine US ports – Miami, Florida, Pensacola, Florida, Galveston, Texas, Key West, Florida, New York City, New York and Newport, Rhode Island – with Bermuda as its only international port visit.
At 295ft, Eagle is the largest tall ship flying the Stars and Stripes. It was constructed in 1936 by the Blohm and Voss Shipyard in Hamburg, Germany, and originally commissioned as the Horst Wessel by the German Navy.
After Second World War, the ship was taken as a war reparation by the US and recommissioned as the U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Eagle, sailing to New London, Connecticut which continues to be its permanent home.
