From lab scientist to Walkers law

Ligaya Sanchez-Wilson is the latest in the Bermuda pupillage of Walkers Bermuda.

Ms Sanchez-Wilson has been working as a paralegal in the law firm’s insolvency & dispute resolution team since April 2021 and will now undertake her formal training, having completed a Bar Professional Training Course at the University of London.

Before law, she trained and worked as a clinical laboratory scientist.

She worked closely with physicians and other medical professionals to diagnose and monitor diseases and effectiveness of treatments.

With experience in both public and private healthcare sectors, Ms Sanchez-Wilson was stationed at a large government-funded children's hospital in Manila, where she cared for some of the most optimistic and cheerful children battling leukaemia and other terminal conditions.

Head of Walkers' training committee, partner Nicole Tovey, stated: "We are delighted to welcome Ligaya into our training programme. She is a very talented young woman who will bring a great deal of skill and empathy into the legal world."

Walkers' pupillage programme is a comprehensive structured training programme, ensuring that pupils are provided with the highest level of practical, technical and soft-skill training in all areas of the firm's practice.

Pupils undertake the programme for 12 months — six months in the corporate finance and funds department and six months in the insolvency & dispute resolution department.

On joining the firm, Ms Sanchez-Wilson commented: "In choosing to train with Walkers, I know that not only will I be able to thrive in a fast-paced, intellectually challenging environment, but I will also be part of a team that emphasises communication and collaboration.

“Everything I have done and continue to do is devoted to one idea: to help people.

“As a legal advocate, I endeavour to further this vision both in and out of the courtroom."
