Island Fresh 5K launched
A food delivery service has joined forces with a fitness organisation to launch a new fundraising event in support of The Eliza DoLittle Society.
Island Fresh, which delivers locally sourced ingredients to encourage healthy home cooking, and Evans Performance Training which provides fitness and nutrition training, will host the Island Fresh 5K Food Run on Sunday at the Arboretum in Devonshire.
The Eliza DoLittle Society provides healthy and nutritious meals to the food-insecure.
Hayley Evans, owner of Island Fresh, said: “Over the past year in operation, we often had excess food which we did not want to waste. In looking for a place for this food to go we discovered the Eliza DoLittle Society. I was very impressed with the work they were doing so we wanted to see how we could assist.
“This mission, I felt, was completely in line with the values and ethos of that of myself and my brother Liam who runs Evans Performance Training.”
Evans added: “With all my clients, whether it be athletes or people wishing just too keep fit, ensuring a healthy and balanced diet is critical to both mental and physical health. When the opportunity to support this event came up I jumped at it.”
The Eliza DoLittle Society provides assistance directly to its clients through its food pantry in Warwick. The Pantry secures both purchased and donated food from local wholesalers, grocers, farmers, individuals, businesses and community organisations.
Each bag of food contains a variety of fresh bread, vegetables and frozen and canned foods based on availability. Food items are rotated throughout the month to ensure variety is offered.
Clare Mello-Robinson, the charity’s executive director, said: “As a charity we are always looking to try and raise funds and awareness about TEDS and the impact of food insecurity. When Island Fresh and Evans Performance Training offered to help organise an event to raise money for us we were delighted to participate.”
The event starts at 8am for walkers and 8.30am for runners, and is open to participants of all ages. Sign-up is available here until Saturday.
